 Vinho Verde is the world’s largest demarcated wine region, covering some 7,000 square kilometres in the Minho, Douro and Beira Litoral provinces. It has a strong geographic, climatic and cultural identity, explaining why Vinho Verde is regarded as Portugal’s most original wine. Wet, fertile, granitic and with mild temperatures influenced by Atlantic winds, the region seems to be painted with all the greens in the palette. Towns like Caminha, Viana do Castelo, Ponte de Lima, Monção, Braga, Guimarães and Barcelos are steeped in history, and there are many prehistoric site that pre-date Roman rule. Gastronomy is a Vinho Verde strong point, furnishing the visitor with memorable experiences of unusual dishes, such as papas de sarrabulho (offal and oatmeal puddings), lamprey, chicken rice (cooked with its blood) and pork rojões.
