Steeped in vine-growing tradition, the coastal area south of the Tagus estuary dubbed “Costa Azul” is the realm of two famed grape varieties: Castelão and Moscatel de Setubal. Castelão is a highly popular red wine; and the variety of Muscat grape, grown around the Setubal area and in particular on the slopes of the Arrabida mountain, produces the fortified wine, Setubal Moscatel.

But the Moscatel and Periquita region offers a great deal more than wine. The Tagus and Sado estuaries have long been home to a variety of wildlife, particularly wading birds like herons, flamingoes, stilts, plovers and sandpipers. Nature-watching boat trips on the Sado provide unforgettable experiences. A tour of the Serra da Arrabida National Park is a must, as are the charming coastal resorts of Portinho de Arrabida and the Troia Peninsula, Setubal, Palmela and moving inland, Alcacer do Sal. There are wineries to visit, golf courses to play on, historic sites to explore and wines and gastronomy to indulge in.

As good wines are seldom found without good food, Palmela and the Setubal Peninsula region is rich in culinary tradition. The sea and the rivers provide all manner of fish for bouillabaisses, eels – stewed and fried, and seafood noodle stews. Azeitão and Palmela are famous for their sweets, perfect accompaniments for perfumed Moscatel wines.

Restaurants

Hortelã da Ribeira
– A restaurant as simple in decor as sophisticated in its food. Perhaps its most famous dish is a grouper and clam broth (canja) – a serving for four people and a meal in itself for many. Huss soup and cuttlefish rice with clams and prawns are also highly recommended. Iconic pork with clams and chicken stew will please meat-loving palates, and there are plenty of choices to delight the sweet-toothed. The wine list concentrates on Alentejo and Palmela wines. A trump card of the house – from the diner’s viewpoint – are the prices.
Bairro de Santa Luzia, Alcácer do Sal
Closed Sunday evening and all day Monday
Tel: 00351 265612235

Ribamar
– One of the restaurant’s strong points is its wine cellar, air-conditioned and containing over 1000 labels. A taste of this Sesimbra restaurant’s cuisine would be monkfish with lobster sauce, stone bass and shellfish rice and a rich fish and shellfish soup. The Grand Marnier parfait with orange coulis makes a fine end to the meal. Prices around €20 to £30.
Avenida dos Náufragos, Sesimbra
Open all year
Tel: 00351 212234853

Quinta de Catralvos
– This restaurant is part of a large wine development in Azeitão, the geographic and symbolic heart of the region which produces Moscatel. The cuisine is sophisticated yet respects regional traditions. There is a good selection of appetisers, experimental soups like mushroom “cappuccino”, “gauffre” of herbs with Azeitão cheese, and a worthy variety of desserts. Prices can range from €35 to €50.
Estrada Nacional 379, Azeitão
Closed Monday and Tuesday. Lunch only on Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday, with lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday.
Tel: 00351 212197610
