The hilly landscape is one of its most obvious attractions, not only scenic but producing wines with Beira Interior denomination of origin. In addition to the natural beauty of the Estrela, Gardunha, Malcata and Marofa hills, and gorges cut by the rivers Côa and Zêzere, the area is one of Portugal’s most traditional vine growing regions, providing the visitor with singular experiences. It covers the area where Trás-os-Montes borders Beira to the North, and stretches down to the vast and undulating plains of the Alentejo to the South. If you like vestiges of ancient history, then you are in the right place. Here you feel the cultural heritage and monuments left by Cistercian monks in their former vineyards and monasteries like Santa Maria de Aguiar and São João de Tarouca. Here you can visit medieval villages such as Castelo Rodrigo and Marialva and granite-built Sortelha, or take in the beautifully preserved town of Almeida, or historic Pinhel, Covilhã, Guarda and Castelo Branco. Sheltered by the hill ranges from Atlantic influence, there is little rainfall but very cold winters and scorching summers, ideal conditions for great wines. These are whites in the northern region around Castelo Rodrigo, and those from the sub-region of Pinhel, whose grapes are punished by harsh winters and blistering summers. Such wines require vigorous regional cuisine and quality produce, not least being possibly Portugal’s most famed cheese, Queijo de Serra.

Escorropicha, Ana! – Built in an old but renovated granite building, the first thing to make one smile about this restaurant is it curious name (ordering “Ana” to drain her glass!) The appetizers are highly recommended as are regional specialities like fried Morcela (black pudding), migas de bacalhau (salt-cod with cabbage and corn-bread), cèpe mushrooms with corn-bread and tile-grilled lamb. Service is attentive, the cellar well stocked with regional wines, and the cost is reasonable.

Quinta da Bica –The restaurant is part of the golf resort on the outskirts of Belmonte. The philosophy behind the restaurant is to treat the tradition of regional cookery with bold creativity, and the results speak for themselves. Grilled lamb with sautéed mushrooms and turnip greens, veal fillet with Serra cheese, mushroom pâté and grilled prawn with ginger and parsley-garlic rice are part of the bill of fare. For the sweet-toothed, fresh-baked angel cake or tropical fruit “soup” with meringue are tempting desserts. The bill will average at €35 per head.

Frei Papinhas – In the heart of Castelo Branco, this restaurant with its medieval decor is a place that really knows how to treat regional cookery. Octopus and pig’s ear salads or fish soup to whet the appetite are followed by heartier dishes. An old salt-cod recipe, oven-baked with corn-bread, a “medieval barbecue”, fried kid with bread sauce, topped off with “conventual” egg-based confectionery comprise the backbone of this menu. There is a substantial wine list, and the prices are around €20 to €25.
