 The Vinhas de Cister Wine Route is part of a relatively recent demarcated region, Távora-Varosa (south of the Douro river). While its demarcation may be recent, its history is most certainly not, stretching back to the founding of the nation and strongly influenced by Cistercian monks. The Cistercians left an impressive legacy in churches and monasteries and an enduring tradition of vine growing, still evident in the region’s character. An area of countless smallholdings cut into terraces clinging to steep hillsides, they endure cold and wet winters and hot, dry summers. An area where sparkling wine (espumante) shows exceptional character, sheltered in the sub-region marked by the River Varosa. This is home to one of the most famous producers of espumante, Murganheira, whose cellars are carved deep into the granite hillside to a depth of 72 meters.
In addition to the outstanding churches, monasteries and wines raised from the land worked by tireless monks, it now yields other kinds of justifiably famed produce, such as Resende cherries, Arouquesa beef, sweets from Teixeira and cured hams and sausage from Lamego.

Tábua d’Aço – An original dish to emerge from the kitchen of Tábua d’Aço, is its salt-cod with coriander and corn-bread, served on a hot brick with olive oil-drizzled baked potato. More appetising suggestions are pork fillet with mustard, baked octopus, lamb chops and a rather more banal squid and shrimp on a spit. Try hazelnut mousse to sweeten the palate. The wine cellar is rich in Douro wines. Prices around €15.

Casa Filipe – Located in the centre of Lamego, Casa Filipe boasts no sophisticated trimmings. This is honest-to-goodness regional cooking in simple surroundings, serving satisfied customers for more than 100 years. A region with a strong tradition of good food, some suggestions for Casa Filipe may sound simple in translation, but don’t be fooled: meat loaf, salt-cod baked with potato and rice, roast kid, cured sausage rice, and tripe with rice. Wines are regional and prices are around €15.
