Bairrada Wine Route Print E-mail
A region of flat and fertile terrain with a mild climate influenced by its proximity to the Atlantic, Bairrada extends from the foot of the Caramulo and Buçaco hills too the dunes and beaches on the coast. Bairrada has a long and grand tradition of vine growing, and a reputation for great wines from quality grape varieties, such as Baga for red wines and Bical for whites. But the region has far more than vineyards. It is home to Portugal’s most prestigious and oldest university, Coimbra, while in coastal Aveiro a modern university is helping to put Portugal on the map of new technology. Character laden cities like Coimbra and Aveiro, unspoiled beaches like Costa Nova, Mira and Figueira da Foz, curative spas at Luso and Curia, Roman ruins at Conimbriga and the luxurious Buçaco Palace Hotel are more than enough reason to visit the region. And to travel through Bairrada without sampling its famous suckling pig would be to miss out on one of life’s great pleasures…

Restaurants

Arcadas da Capela
– The restaurant is in Quinta das Lágrimas, a centuries-old palatial manor house which is now a hotel. Steeped in history, it was here that in the 14th century lovers Prince Pedro and Inês de Castro held their ill-fated trysts, and where the Duke of Wellington sojourned during the Peninsular Wars. The cuisine takes regional flavours and dishes and adds a dash of creative flair, with the menu changing according to the seasons. There is an ample wine cellar with hundreds of choices. The prices reflect the standard of cuisine, service and setting, varying between €30 to €60 per person.
Santa Clara, Coimbra
Open all year

A Tasca do Confrade
– Nestled in the picturesque old part of Aveiro, this “tavern” (tasca) is more than a place to eat well, it is where diners go for lengthy discussion over what they are eating … and drinking. Fresh-caught fish stew (Cataplana), eels, fried fish, salt-cod cheeks à la Gafanha, or more simple fare of chicken rice and Portuguese stew (cozido à portuguesa), are just a sample of the extensive choice. Regional confectionery completes the menu. The prices are also attractive, around €15.
Rua dos Marnotos, Aveiro
Closed Sunday evening and all-day Wednesday.

Praia do Tubarão
– Restaurant Praia do Tubarão merits a visit not only for its food, but also its famed location, being one of a surviving terrace of brightly-painted old wooden houses overlooking the river; very evocative of times gone by. Fried eels and eel stew are house specialities, low on potato but heavy on fish, as you would expect. There is also a wide selection of fresh fish and the clams are usually very good. The wine list is packed with Bairrada labels. Price per person is around €25.
Gafanha da Encarnação, Costa Nova
Closed Monday
