“Everything about it has grandeur,” wrote Nobel prize winner José Saramago of the region that has been producing Dão wines for a millennium. The influence of medieval monks who farmed these lands is still tangible in their monasteries, vineyards and the way they made their wines. With the imposing Serra da Estrela mountains looming on the horizon, the Dão, with its wet winters and hot, dry summers is a region of smallholdings, of lush vegetation, clean air and countless limpid streams running over granite beds. Pine, oak and chestnut trees are common, but vines predominate – over 70 million of them. And what vines! It is said that the Dão village of Tourigo gave rise to what many consider the queen of Portuguese red grape varieties, Touriga Nacional. Cheese, kid, cured hams and sausages provide a varied and tasty bill of Dão fare. Good fruit are also typical of the region, such as the perfumed and sweet Bravo de Esmolfe apple. In addition to exploring historic towns like Viseu, Penalva de Castelo, Oliveira do Hospital and Seia, there are many old villages lost in deep valleys and high hills waiting to be discovered.

Restaurants

Pousada do Convento do Desagravo
– With a backdrop of the Estrela and Açor mountain ranges, this pousada in Vila Pouca da Beira, which dates back to the 18th century, has received a number of awards for good regional cuisine. A famous dish from its menu is “fried farinheira sausage with spare rib chunks and poached egg”, a lengthy yet self-explanatory title. Equally suggestive is “trout sautéed with almonds” and “Pudding á la Oliveira do Hospital”. There is a good wine list and prices range around €15 to €25.

O Cortiço
– One of the most famed restaurants in the Beira provinces. The menu is replete with oddly-named yet descriptive dishes: “rabbit, drunk for three days”, “beans with everything like the Abbot’s maid used to make”, and “Dona Cilinha from Viseu’s roast duck”. A vast range of local produce prepared the traditional way cram the menu, from a variety of cured sausage to pork ribs to desserts. Located right in the historic centre of town, close to the Cathedral, there is also a well-stocked cellar of Douro wines. The price per head should not exceed €25.

Bem Haja – A restaurant built in an old wine cellar where vestiges of its past have wisely been preserved, such as the old wine press. One of the fortes of this Nelas restaurant is the extent and quality of its appetisers, everything from salt cod with corn-bread, to oven-cooked octopus, to partridge with coffee and pork in a variety of guises. Dão wines take pride of place on the wine list. Prices around €15 to €25 per head.
